The Tunza Watoto Foundation Newsletter - October Edition

06 Oct

Here’s what has happened in the last few months and what’s to come!

Dear Friends of Tunza Watoto,

These past few months have brought both progress and challenges. All our primary school children are thriving in school, while our one high school student has been unwell and remains at home, accessing good healthcare continues to be a real challenge. The children were overjoyed by the heartfelt cards from Southwest Airlines employees, a simple gesture that made them feel truly seen. We are also thankful for the little comforts that mean so much: private bathrooms for older kids, cozy mattresses for safe sleep, and clean drinking water that keeps them healthy.

As we move into the next quarter, we carry this gratitude and continue working toward a sustainable future for the children in our care. With heartfelt thanks,

The Tunza Watoto Foundation Team: Nyawira Gitonga

Strategy Update

-> At Tunza Watoto Foundation, we are moving from a donor-dependent model to a self-sustaining, impact-driven approach. Your support now does more than provide immediate relief, it builds systems and skills that empower children for life.

-> Our first step in this journey is the Kitchen of Hope, a safe, functional kitchen where children are fed today and trained to generate income tomorrow.

Why We Need Your Support- Help out Here

We need to build a safe, functional kitchen & dining that will not only feed children but also train older kids in catering skills for income.

Current Situation:
-> Kitchen &dining area made of metal sheets, earth floor, limited space, safety hazard
-> Lack of opportunities for older children after graduation.
-> The home depends on donations for recurring needs

The Strategic Shift: Roadmap to Sustainability

Phase 1 (2025–26): Pilot & Foundation

-> Build Kitchen & Dining Hall

-> Launch small pilot programs

-> Employ the older children who have trained in culinary skills

-> Start Sustainability Fund (seed investments)

Phase 2 (2026–27): Scaling Programs

-> Expand vocational programs and community involvement

-> Launch income-generating programs: catering, agriculture, crafts

-> Establish partnerships for CSR and grants

Phase 3 (2028–30): Self-Sufficiency & Replication

-> Social enterprises fully operational, revenue funds programs

-> Sustainability Fund covers majority of operational costs

-> Expand and replicate programs to other communities
